Princeton, N.J. (April 15, 2007) ¡ª
In response to increased demand and to assist the admission needs of Japanese students seeking to study abroad, ETS is scheduling a one-time special administration of the TOEFL test in that country on June 3, 2007, company officials announced today. The test will be offered in paper-based test (PBT) format.
Registration will be available online only for the June 3, paper-based test and will open on Friday, April 20. Candidates can access the TOEFL paper-based online registration system. Payment must be made by credit card (American Express, Discover, JCB, MasterCard, or Visa). The deadline to register for the test is Friday, May 4, 2007.
Approximately 8,000 registrations will be provided for test centers in Osaka, Nagoya and Tokyo. Because this is a special administration, test takers will not be allowed to change their test date or test center. No walk-in registrations at the centers will be allowed on June 3rd. In addition, test takers who are already registered for the TOEFL iBT test cannot transfer their registration to the PBT test.
"We recognize that because of the popularity of the TOEFL exam, demand has temporarily exceeded capacity in Japan," says Paul Ramsey, ETS Senior Vice President. "When such a situation arises, we offer an official paper-based version that is equally valid and accepted by universities around the world. We hope paper-based testing will relieve some of the pressure from the current situation."
ETS is taking additional steps to improve access to iBT testing. These steps include increasing capacity at current university test centers, expanding operations into other educational settings as well as offering the test through non-educational commercial sites that can offer high-quality, secure administrations of the exam.
